Carly’s journey from Service to Support
After 15 years of dedicated service in the Royal Australian Navy, Carly knew her next mission would be just as meaningful – supporting fellow veterans through mental health care.
Originally from Lake Macquarie, Carly joined the Navy straight out of high school, serving as a Medic across ships and bases, mostly in Sydney. During her time in uniform, she pursued education alongside service, completing a Diploma of Paramedicine, a Diploma of Nursing, and eventually a Bachelor of Nursing.
After transitioning out of the Navy in 2021, Carly returned to her hometown with her husband and two young children. She began working as a Registered Nurse with NSW Health, and soon found herself drawn to the complexities and impact of mental health care. Now, she’s studying a Master of Mental Health Nursing online, while working as a mental health nurse for a veteran-specific organisation.
“The work makes a significant difference to the lives of other veterans”, Carly shares. “I love getting to know clients I work with and [helping them] set realistic, achievable goals.”
Carly chose the University of Newcastle for its flexibility, user-friendly Canvas platform, and the ability to study completely online – an ideal fit for a busy working mum. She’s found the coursework not only relevant but immediately applicable to her role, especially in areas like digital mental health and telehealth.
“The courses I have completed to date are relevant and contemporary, which has allowed me to implement my learnings immediately within my work,” she says.
While Carly’s transition from military to civilian life had its challenges, she found strength in staying connected to her military community and engaging with veteran networks. She’s also appreciated the support from passionate educators and the Veteran Pathways Advisor, who helped her feel more connected.
“I wouldn’t have had the civilian employment opportunities I’ve had without higher education,” Carly reflects. “It also opens up new opportunities for leadership and management roles within my organisation.”
Her hopes for Defence members considering study in the future?
“I would love to see more veterans connect at [the University of Newcastle]... Veterans [can] provide professional guidance to one another regarding how their higher education can positively impact on their military career if they’re still serving, or how it can help them to grow as a civilian.”
