A passion for technology and a unique opportunity at the University of Newcastle set Brody on the path to a career in Defence.

For Brody, the University of Newcastle has been more than just a place to study, it’s been the launchpad to a career in Defence, made possible through a unique opportunity to gain a sponsored security clearance during his degree.

The Demystifying Security Clearances initiative helps students understand what obtaining a clearance involves and fast tracks the process, something that often delays workplace engagement by 6 weeks to 6 months. The University acts as a clearance sponsor so students can more easily access roles that would otherwise be held back by those delays.

While completing his Bachelor of Information Technology, Brody was awarded a Defence Security Clearance Sponsorship. That sponsorship contributed to his appointment as a Change Lead with Defence.

“It all went very quick,” Brody recalls. “Despite being a thorough process, it gives a significant advantage in the job market. I received a promotion from an intern to full-time permanent position after 3 months.”

Brody was drawn to the University of Newcastle for its strong reputation and location. “The University has a reputation of having a strong supportive learning environment, as well as strong connections with industry-focused programs for undergraduates. But apart from that it’s just a great location. There’s a balance of city life and lush scenic landscapes. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else honestly.”

Choosing to study the Bachelor of Information Technology felt like a natural choice. “I’ve always had a passion for databases and programming, and I knew this would lead me into the growing opportunities in the mining and Defence sectors that Newcastle is home to.”

The career-ready placement program was another standout. “Getting to intern with 3ME Technology in Cardiff gave me the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the degree, as well as expose me to sustainable technologies developed within the region,” he says. He also credits academic staff with shaping his experience. “Dr Jacqueline Bailey was a terrific mentor and educator. She gave me confidence in my public speaking, and her methods of teaching helped me secure a High Distinction in the class. Dr Teuku Geumpana lectured many of my classes, and I consider him an inspiring and effective lecturer that greatly enhanced my understanding of the course content.”

Brody first learned about the security clearance sponsorship through a student email. “I first learned about it through communication sent to my student email address, highlighting opportunities for meeting employers and making industry connections.” While the application process is detailed, it provides a real edge. “The process involves a thorough background check on employment, personal and educational history.”

Now working as an Enterprise Change Lead, his role involves configuration management, engineering change management, and collaborating with people across different areas to support his business unit. “The practical focus of my degree, combined with the career-ready placement program helped me apply my learning within the industry,” he says.

Brody encourages students to take advantage of every opportunity while studying. “Take full advantage of any opportunities advertised such as seminars, conferences or
placements. Do not be afraid to start working on projects outside of class. You can continue to refine the projects you completed in class, or build your own passion projects with classmates. These experiences will complement your degree and prepare you for the workforce.”

Brody’s journey shows how the University of Newcastle’s industry connections and unique opportunities, like the Defence Security Clearance Sponsorship, can help students turn their studies into a successful career pathway.
