The University of Newcastle has a strong reputation for preparing students for their future careers by offering advanced, accredited qualifications, preparing students for practice in Australia and around the world.
Graduating with a Master of Professional Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) from the University of Newcastle allowed Thanmai, an international student from India to apply her skills directly in her role at the Australian Railway Track Corporation (ARTC). “Earning my Master of Professional Engineering degree in Electrical and Electronic was crucial in securing my position as a Graduate Signal Engineer at ARTC. “The subjects I studied in my coursework perfectly matched the technical requirements of the role.”
The hands-on aspects of her degree, like lab sessions and practical projects, were invaluable in turning theory into real-world skills. “The lab sessions and coursework helped me better understand key concepts. I enjoyed the practical sessions that accompanied most subjects.”
One of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences for Thanmai was her project work in the VLSI domain. When initial results didn’t meet expectations, her persistence led to success. “From this experience, I learned that nothing is impossible when you are determined. Courage is needed to turn failure into valuable lessons. Success comes from hard work, planning, motivation, and positivity.”
Her advice to future engineers is to set long-term goals and remain curious. “For anyone considering postgraduate studies, define your goals and think long-term. Research the course thoroughly to ensure it aligns with your academic and professional objectives.”
Balancing work, studies, and personal life was challenging, but Thanmai managed by starting early and completing assignments ahead of deadlines, which reduced stress. She built a support network with fellow students, which helped her overcome obstacles. “I regularly communicated with my professors, which helped me think creatively, solve problems, and understand subjects in greater depth. Communication was a key part of my success.”
In her final semester, Thanmai made use of the university's career guidance services, which provided valuable support for job interviews, resume writing, and exploring opportunities. “The career support team was very helpful, providing relevant advice and addressing student needs effectively.”
Now, in her role at ARTC, she assists with testing and commissioning signalling works, managing signal design processes, analysing Train Control Reports, and contributing to strategic planning. “This degree not only enhanced my technical expertise but also demonstrated my commitment and readiness to take on challenges in a dynamic environment like ARTC.”
