Syahmina Zulkepi chose to pursue a Master of Architecture at the University of Newcastle after discovering the program was internationally recognised through the Board of Architects Malaysia, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM).

Having previously completed her Bachelor of Design (Architecture) here at the University, she was confident in the quality of education and professional recognition. This accreditation ensures her qualifications are recognised both in Malaysia and internationally, enhancing her career prospects and providing a seamless transition into the professional world.

Syahmina’s passion for architecture goes beyond buildings; she is deeply interested in placemaking and the revitalisation of heritage and culture. Her journey at the University of Newcastle from undergraduate to postgraduate, has been enriched by the 24/7 studio access and the strong camaraderie among students. She finds the studio to be an excellent place to explore her interests and understand what will be valuable in her future practice stating, “the 24/7 studio space is a good place to explore things of interest and understand what is of value in my own future practice.”

Studying primarily at the Callaghan campus, Syahmina received two scholarships that allowed her to dedicate herself fully to her studies without the burden of financial stress. “Both scholarships have been helpful in making sure I could focus and spend my time dedicated to studying my degree.” she states.

Syahmina is currently gaining practical experience by working casually at an architectural firm. This role has enabled her to build her portfolio and prepare for her future career. “In particular, I would like to look closer into placemaking, and the revitalisation of heritage and culture,” she says.

Syahmina advises students considering studying abroad to step out of their comfort zones to fully embrace the experience. She says, “Force yourself to make new friends. Being an international student who is adapting to language and culture and being away from family while trying to make sure we stay on the right track to graduate can be very intimidating and lonely. But things get better when you have the right people around you.”
