Studying at Australia’s leading clinical law school, Sophia knew she was in the right place to build her experience and make a head start in her career as a lawyer. As local of Newcastle, she chose to study at the University of Newcastle to stay in the city that she loves and be near friends and family.

Sophia is in the second year of her Bachelor of Criminology and Bachelor of Laws (Honours). She says she chose this degree because she is passionate about advocating for people and providing everyone with an equal opportunity.

“Studying at the University of Newcastle has given me an amazing opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge through the variety of courses that the Law School offers. I’ve experienced firsthand how to communicate and liaise with clients by participating in the University of Newcastle’s Free Legal Clinic which offers legal aid and support to community members,” she said.

Sophia’s degree has encouraged her to develop her courtroom practice through various learning experiences that involved real word legal scenarios. “One of my favourite practical experiences was when we submitted a fake court case scenario to a judge. I was acting as the appellant and I had a defence team opposite me, which was a really great experience for all of us,” she said.

In addition to her practical experience, Sophia’s involvement in the University of Newcastle’s Law Students’ Association allows her to network and build a supportive community around her.

In the future, Sophia hopes to commence a career in criminal defence work. “I know that when I graduate, the university will have made me job-ready and I will have the skills I need to do what I want to do.”
