When Sarthak Birani, an international student from Jaipur, India, was searching for a university that aligned with his passion for automation and control, the University of Newcastle's quality rankings stood out. Upon discussions with his agency, Sarthak discovered the University had a unique offering of innovative engineering programs. "My agency recommended exploring innovative engineering degrees like Mechatronics Engineering offered by the University."
One of the key factors that drew Sarthak to the University of Newcastle was the opportunities surrounding the campus. Located near emerging industries in various engineering sectors, Newcastle provides numerous job prospects for international students. “The collaborations with various industry partners in the Hunter region drew me to the University of Newcastle.”
Throughout his studies, Sarthak found the program focused heavily on practical skills in the initial years, helping him build a solid foundation before diving into specialised Mechatronics courses. By participating in student engineering teams like NU Marines and taking elective courses, Sarthak gained valuable hands-on experience that prepared him for future industry internships. “Having access to industry-specific equipment through student engineering teams has enriched my educational experience.”
Looking ahead, Sarthak's career goal is to work in an environment focused on building products that meet the needs of end users. “I am working towards gaining skills that will help me build my own projects through internships in engineering firms in the automation and control industry.”
Currently, Sarthak is completing a 12-week industrial experience at Austube Mills (Infrabuild), which has been invaluable for building professional networks. “Working here has given me insights into how the company operates, which will help me in a graduate role and with my overall development as a professional.”
In addition to his industrial experience, Sarthak has worked various on-campus jobs that helped him develop problem-solving and communication skills, especially through his time working with Career Services. “The flexibility around work hours to accommodate my study schedule is what I like the most.” The university’s expos and leadership programs have also expanded his career prospects. “The university's expos and leadership programs such as iLead have facilitated direct interactions with industry professionals, expanding my network and prospects.”
Beyond his studies, Sarthak enjoys the vibrant lifestyle that Newcastle offers. “Newcastle has got heaps of beautiful beaches, vibrant Sunday markets, and other fun activities to take part in throughout the Hunter and Newcastle region.” He has also taken on various roles in the University of Newcastle Students' Association (UNSA) as Vice President (Education) and now as an International Student Representative.
Sarthak’s advice to incoming international students is to maintain a balanced work-life-study routine. “The most important advice would be to focus on studying and maintaining a balanced work-life-study routine is paramount to success.”
