Rene Antonio Arnobit, known as Tony, is an international student from the Philippines pursuing a double degree in Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of International Business at the University of Newcastle. He found the university while searching for double degree programs online and was drawn to its flexible study options, beautiful location, and impressive rankings.

Tony has always been passionate about business, particularly in operations. His experience on the operations team at his previous job allowed him to understand “the rationale behind decisions, factors for consideration, and day-to-day tasks that make the business run smoothly” as he puts it.

Tony observed that the business leaders he admired typically fell into the category of being locally educated with international business degrees. Motivated by this, Tony aimed to join that elite group and began exploring options for pursuing his master’s abroad. While his primary goal was to secure an MBA, he also sought a second degree to differentiate himself in the market. As a global citizen with a keen interest in conducting business across borders, Tony ultimately chose to study a Master of International Business.

Tony has found that the University encourages a wonderful sense of community where everyone looks out for one another. This supportive environment has been a platform for him to build valuable industry connections throughout his degree. He shares, “My mentors at the University have opened up some doors for me to some incredible experiences.”

One of the highlights of his journey was joining the MBA Industry Consultative Committee, where he represented international students, as well as participating with fellow students in the EQUIS re-accreditation process.

Tony also appreciates the engaging nature of his coursework, particularly the opportunities to enhance his public speaking skills. He expresses, “Being able to speak in front of a crowd is exhilarating for me, and the Uni gives me an opportunity to do so.”

Imaging an exciting future ahead, Tony knows he will soon face a pivotal decision. He reflects, “Once I get to this point, I’ll find myself at a crossroads on how to proceed.” His initial plan is to complete his degree and return to the Philippines to join the business community, ideally at the upper middle management level.

However, his experiences during the program have introduced him to incredible people who support his ambitions and believe he would thrive in the industry here in Australia. He acknowledges that making this decision will require “a lot of planning and soul searching,” but he’s eager to explore all the possibilities that lie ahead.

As Tony looks ahead to his career, he has some valuable advice for fellow international students: “I would highly recommend that international students get out of their comfort zones and embrace the study culture here in Newcastle.” He highlights the importance of making friends beyond your immediate community and not limiting yourself to familiar circles. By doing so, you can deepen your experience and create lasting connections that will benefit you both personally and professionally.
