Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do when they finish school, and that’s perfectly normal. A higher education is for anyone who wants to learn, regardless of their background, age, circumstances, or abilities. For Megan, a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) student, her university experience started a little later in life. It’s a decision that has changed her life for the better.

“Deciding to quit my job and study full-time as a mature age student was one of the scariest but best decisions I ever made!” she said.

After working in an office for ten years, Megan longed for a more meaningful career. She felt that Social Work was a natural fit, as she is passionate about helping people in the community. Once she was accepted into her degree, she never looked back.

Megan says she has thoroughly enjoyed her time studying at the University of Newcastle. “I have pushed myself outside my comfort zone, undertaken amazing opportunities whilst on field placement, made lifelong friendships and learnt so much along the way,” she said. While studying can be challenging, Megan feels it was the “hardest but most rewarding” thing she’s ever done.

As a wheelchair user, Megan utilised the Accessibility service, which provides several support services including transport across campus. “It was really helpful in helping me to make sure my placement, classes and lectures are all accessible for me,” she said.

While Megan is not too sure what she’d like to do once she graduates, she says the great thing about her degree is that it sets you up to work in a variety of fields. “I can hardly wait to get out into the real world and start putting all my knowledge into practice,” she said.
