Martha Neema Bukulu’s decision to study a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle was shaped by a desire to gain the best education and hands-on experience, while becoming an inspiration for young girls in her home country of Uganda.
Martha was immediately drawn to the institution's reputation and offerings. “I wanted an environment that would equip me with the best skills to reach my goals,” she says. Her decision was also influenced by family ties, as her uncle, an alumnus, spoke highly of his time at the university. “He is always praising how exceptional it is,” Martha adds.
One of the key aspects of nursing that attracted Martha is the balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application. “Nursing offers hands-on experience and gives students skills that they can use during clinical practice,” she explains. “It also teaches me more about connecting with patients and ensuring they receive the best care.” These elements are crucial for Martha, who has always aimed to excel and inspire. “I want to be the best version of myself by pursuing every goal I have set,” she says. “I hope to inspire younger girls in my country to chase their dreams and not feel limited in their aspirations.”
Martha’s academic journey has been enriched by the University’s support system and practical experiences. She highlights the invaluable skills she’s acquired, such as taking and recording patient vital signs and administering subcutaneous injections. Most of her studies take place at the Callaghan campus, where she finds the health clinic particularly impressive. “It’s exceptional, especially for students who need to get their vaccines ready for placement,” she notes. “It’s a good support system and quite affordable.”
As a recipient of a scholarship, Martha feels grateful for the financial support that has eased her educational journey. “Receiving the scholarship has made it more affordable for my family and ensures I can reach my goals smoothly,” she says.
Beyond academics, Martha is active in various extracurricular activities, including the Salsa Club and the French Club. “Being part of these groups has helped me socialize with people from different backgrounds and learn new dance styles,” she says. Her passion for languages and cultures is evident as she continues to nurture her French-speaking skills, having lived in France previously.
Martha’s advice to prospective students is clear and encouraging: “Go for it! The Academic Learning Support team has personally helped me improve my academic writing skills, and the University offers a diverse environment where you can make friends from different backgrounds and join various clubs to build your social network.”
With her sights set on becoming a surgical nurse and eventually specializing as an anaesthetic nurse, Martha is well on her way to achieving her goals. In her free time, she loves visiting the calming beaches of Newcastle, reflecting on her journey and the exciting future that lies ahead.
