Le Nguyen Hoang Thong, well known amongst peers as ‘Timmy’, came across the University when his agent proposed to him the ASEAN scholarship at the University of Newcastle, and the benefits that it gives to the University’s International cohorts both academically and financially.
Alongside this, studying at the University of Newcastle hosts many benefits that can assist with a student’s professional growth and development, ensuring that they are career ready.
Timmy states, “Continuously developing new skills is one of the key highlights of my degree; I’m either learning during the lectures or building transferrable and collaborative skills. This program has allowed me to showcase my critical thinking especially in group projects.”
He adds, “I’ve spent most of my study time in NuSpace library, where I can easily access my course materials in a spacious and peaceful setting. I feel that at NuSpace, I can give my all to my studies without there being any unnecessary distractions.”
When International students choose to study at the University of Newcastle, not only are they a part of an organization that supports their professional and academic growth, but they can also experience the culture and community that is provided within Newcastle and its surrounds.
Timmy says, “I absolutely love the beaches and the people here in Newcastle. The city is full of nothing but energy, and I enjoy my morning run around the beach with my local friends.”
Alongside his adaption to a new lifestyle after landing in Newcastle, Timmy also reflects on his involvement with the Vietnamese Student Club, and how this helped him settle into the unfamiliar and unknown through familiarity of culture.
“I joined the Vietnamese Students at the University of Newcastle (VSUN) club when I commenced study. They welcomed me with open arms, and everyone was very friendly and helpful. The transition between moving to another country for study was made easier thanks to my friends within the club, as it made me feel as though I wasn’t alone on this journey of a lifetime.
Currently in his final year of study, Timmy shares further insight into his experience at the University, and to the future alumni at the University of Newcastle;
“The University of Newcastle is a diverse environment where students from around the globe can come together to excel academically and enrich their life experiences. It is a good opportunity to make new friends around the world and create memorable moments together. With all the beautiful beaches and peaceful setting environment, I believe this is the perfect place for all of us as students to fully focus on our professional development and career paths.”
