Lana has always had a passion for Information Technology, which led her to pursue a Certificate III and IV in IT at TAFE before embarking on her Diploma in Information Technology at the University of Newcastle. Having not completed her HSC, Lana opted for an alternative pathway to university.
Lana began researching alternative pathways and discovered the University of Newcastle’s Diploma program. Filled with excitement at the prospect of being one step closer to achieving her dreams, she decided to bite the bullet and apply.
Studying the Diploma was a transformative experience for Lana. It empowered her and changed her mindset about university, showing her that there are multiple paths to success. Her initial apprehensions about studying and feelings of ‘imposter syndrome’, were quickly dashed once the met the other students, who immediately made her feel at home. Adjusting to the demands of studying was a challenge at first, but Lana overcame them with hard work and additional support from the university.
After completing her Diploma, Lana has continued her academic journey by pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Newcastle. With credits from her Diploma, Lana was able to successfully start the second year of her degree.
Currently serving as a Diploma Support Peer (DSP), Lana provides valuable support to new diploma students, drawing from her own experiences to guide and assist them in their academic journey. Her role allows her to make a positive impact and help others navigate the challenges of transitioning to higher education.
When not on campus, Lana enjoys spending time at the beach in Newcastle, swimming, and soaking up the sun with friends. However, most of her study time is spent in the campus library, where she reserves a meeting room for collaborative study sessions with friends. With access to whiteboards and screens, these sessions are not only productive but enjoyable.
Her advice to others considering a Diploma is to “believe in yourself, stay dedicated, and seek support when needed”.
