Jiaqian Ling, Chinese alumna, chose to study a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Tourism Management and Marketing as she was able to study two differing majors.
She says, “I enjoyed travelling and learning different cultures, so tourism management took me to see what the industry looks like, and how it can impact our society.
“It’s rare to have opportunities to explore the world in a free but guided way. It’s a great way to enjoy the freedom of learning new things without worrying about getting lost.”
Jiaqian also reflects on her experience of living in Newcastle and being a part of the coastal lifestyle that the city offers university students.
“Living in an area with such amazing beaches and oceans gave me the perfect opportunity to try new things like surfing and diving.
“While these activities are often seen as quintessential to coastal living, I was bold enough to step out of my comfort zone and test the waters, literally.”
As part of her coursework within BUSN3500, Jiaqian had the opportunity to gain valuable global experience by participating in the eco-tourism program in Fiji.
“This course sparked my interest in climate change, hazard management, and environmental protection, which ultimately led me to pursuing further studies in the environment.”
She adds, “I’m incredibly grateful to Donna and Po-Hsin who were course coordinator and course supervisor, for going above and beyond to help me enrol. This course has laid the foundations for my current career.”
Outside her studies, Jiaqian secured an on-campus job that allowed her to further develop her skills in business management, as well as how to advocate for herself, and to always seek out opportunities, even in challenging environments.
“This job allowed me assist international students, earn some extra cash and get a better understanding of the local work culture.”
After graduating at the University of Newcastle in 2018, Jiaqian’s passion for the environment took her to further study and career development. Present day, Jiaqian works in environment protection and management.
“My role has a good balance of fieldwork and office work across a variety of topics.
“Each day is different, and every case is unique.”
Whilst Jiaqian’s journey through the University of Newcastle was not the standard pathway experience, the unique environment of Newcastle provided Jiaqian with skills outside of her studies and encouraged her to take advantage of the opportunities that came her way.
“This journey has taught me that even unexpected experiences can build the foundation for your future. I encourage others to explore their own paths, wherever they might lead.”
