Driving data and digital strategy for business through Information Technology
Jiaming’s desire to study a Master of Information Technology stemmed from her fascination with data analytics and its transformative impact on a business’ decision-making outcomes.
She states, “I have always been passionate about learning and applying new technologies to solve real-world problems.” When it came to choosing where to undertake further study, Jiaming said that she chose the University of Newcastle, ultimately due to its excellent reputation and high rankings. “The University’s commitment to providing cutting-edge technology and resources was a significant draw. Additionally, the availability of scholarships and the campus’ ideal location further influenced my decision, as this aligned perfectly with my academic goals and financial needs.”
Jiaming reflects on her experience at the University of Newcastle, and how the IT Project course she enrolled in for her final year gave her transferrable skills required for her career once she was to graduate. “This course had been designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application and involved internal clients with real-world requirements.”
She adds, “This direct exposure to applied work not only enhanced my technical skills but also got me career-ready for any future roles that were to come my way.” The Business Intelligence course that Jiaming took throughout her studies at the University also assisted her professional development, through building advanced skills that are required for data analysis, visualisation and creative thinking.“This course taught me how to effectively interpret large datasets and transform them into actionable insights, which has been essential in delivering high-quality projects that drive strategic positions for our clients.”
When it comes to her overall experience commencing study at the University, Jiaming says that she found the learning environment inspiring and motivating. “The University provided access to extensive resources, including a well-equipped library that was instrumental in helping me complete my studies. “This supportive setting fostered my academic growth and enhanced my overall educational experience.”
Alongside the resources and technology utilised for students to develop skills as they learn, the University of Newcastle also provides internships and placement opportunities that are based outside of the University. These opportunities are a great way for individuals to gain professional experience outside of their program and increase their employability within both domestic and global job markets.
Soon after Jiaming graduated, she had the opportunity to join Advitech Pty Limited as a Data Analyst through the Accelerating Women in METS Internship Program, to which, at current day she is still employed at.
“In this role, I enhanced data management by automating data extraction from pdf and Excel files using Python, significantly speeding up processing times. The internship not only honed my technical skills but also solidified my ability to contribute effectively within the Information Technology industry.”
Reflecting on her experience of studying at the University of Newcastle, Jiaming highly recommends for international students who are considering the University to continue their studies.
Alongside the benefits of a supportive learning environment, with superb facilities and a vibrant community, students also can truly embed themselves into life on campus, explore Newcastle’s unique blend of city and coastal settings, all while building lifelong connections and embracing the local culture, which can greatly enhance both your academic and personal development.
