Ee Ching Yap discovered the Master of Architecture program at the University of Newcastle through friends who were already studying there. As an international student from Malaysia, she found it particularly beneficial that the program was internationally recognised through the Board of Architects Malaysia, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM), ensuring her qualifications would be recognised back home.
Ee Ching, who participated in a meeting with the LAM accreditation board, shared, “we talked about our study experience and studio culture which has been amazing. They were very nice and only wanted to make sure we are enjoying our time here.”
With aspirations to work in an architectural firm as an assistant after graduation, Ee Ching sought a program where she could learn through doing, making, and creating.
“I really wanted to do a design studio focused course, where I could explore creative design, and then design through research,” she states.
The University of Newcastle’s Master of Architecture program allows students to spend most of their time in the Architectural Design Studio. Here, students have access to personal workstations, computer network connections, and 24-hour access, encouraging a collaborative learning environment.
“The Architectural Design Studio has an amazing culture, and it allows me to build upon my skills and connect with professionals,” she says.
Beyond academics, Ee Ching appreciates the university’s culture and how joining the Malaysian University of Newcastle Student Association (MUNSA) helped her transition to studying abroad.
“Being with a group of people from the same home country makes me feel comfortable and at home.”
Outside of her studies, Ee Ching enjoys exploring the beach, finding it a great way to relieve stress.
“I love the beach. It is very accessible through public transport. My friends and I go to the beach very often after class or submissions.”
Ee Ching offers valuable advice for those looking to develop their academic and personal lives in Newcastle and at the University:
“Never be afraid to ask for help. If possible, see if you can speak to alumni and current students about your potential degree, and make sure that the course syllabus and study experience aligns to your expectations and interests.”
