In 2014, Devin began his journey studying the Joint Medical Program at the University of Newcastle, although his passion had started a lot earlier.
Having both parents as doctors and a knee injury at a young age requiring surgery, Devin was inspired to practice medicine and pursue a career as medical doctor.
The stellar reputation of the University of Newcastle’s emphasis on clinically-based teaching from as early as first year inspired Devin to enrol and had “set [the University] apart from the rest.”
Throughout his studies at the University of Newcastle Devin had gained a range of practical experiences in major hospitals across the region, including John Hunter Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle and Maitland Hospital.
“Having the chance to have my placements there gave me clinical exposure which helped me to put my knowledge into practice,” Devin said.
Devin also had the opportunity to do a placement in the Nephrology Department in a major hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This allowed him to travel abroad and study at the same time.
Applying the experience that the University provided as early as first year created a smooth pathway for Devin into full-time work.
“The clinical exposure early on and being able to have placements in hospital allowed me the necessary exposure that made for a seamless transition to full clinical work when I first started [my] internship,” he said.
Reflecting on his close support network of friends during his studies, Devin recalled going through university together as his most enjoyable time.
“Through every high and low and everything in between, having my close group of friends as my constant, meant my university days are some of the best and most memorable moments of my life.”
He said the support and strong theoretical foundation that the University provided and the practical experience he gained had enabled him to achieve his goals and further his aspirations in medicine.
“From my tutors to the amazing hospital staff in my placements, everyone has taught me something that helped shape me.”
Devin is currently a Paediatric Registrar as part of the Paediatric Basic Physician Training program at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. His next goal is to become a Paediatric Consultant. Reflecting on his journey from Newcastle, Devin is optimistic about what other opportunities lie ahead.
“Realising the dream I had from medical school and watching how far I’ve come since then; I look forward to what is to come.”
