When Claudia was presented with the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Information Technology at her workplace, she seized it with enthusiasm.

Having initially been accepted into a Bachelor of Business at the University of Newcastle, Claudia chose to take a gap year after completing her Higher School Certificate (HSC). This gap year led her to a Business Administration Traineeship, marking the beginning of a decade-long career in payroll before transitioning into a systems role within the finance team.

Claudia's longstanding interest in technology was rekindled when her workplace, previously Newcastle Permanent and now NGM Group, announced the Women in STEM Cadetship. "I was fortunate to be one of the eight people selected to undertake a Diploma from my workplace," Claudia shares. This initiative, organized by Karen Blackmore in collaboration with local businesses, chose 19 women to complete Diplomas in Technology.

Reflecting on her educational journey, Claudia notes, "It has been a very long gap year, but I am grateful for this experience. It's never too late to go to university or do further training." Her time at the university was enriched by the campus atmosphere and facilities, particularly the library rooms and study areas.

In her role as Senior HR & Payroll Systems Analyst, Claudia found that the Diploma significantly enhanced her ability to manage the technical aspects of her job. "This Diploma has increased my confidence in this role," she explains. The skills and logic she acquired have been instrumental in improving her efficiency and understanding of her role.

Juggling full-time study with full-time work was a challenge Claudia took on with determination. "I decided early on to see how I would manage studying full-time while working full-time," she says. This experience underscored the importance of self-care and balance.

One of the most inspiring elements of her experience was the dedication behind the Cadetship program. "Seeing the passion of those involved in making this Cadetship happen was truly inspiring," Claudia recalls. She takes pride in completing her Diploma, her first studying experience since 2012, achieving two High Distinctions and four Distinctions.

Looking forward, Claudia is excited to apply her new knowledge in her enhanced role at work. While open to further study, she currently plans to enjoy a break after a year of intensive learning and working.
