Pathway to success

Yasmina had an alternative start to her university journey, enrolling in the Open Foundation program later in life.

“I am an immigrant and haven’t studied for a while, so I wanted to determine if I could complete this program first,” she said.

While Yasmina had completed a degree in her home country, English was not her first language, and this created a barrier for her to study in Australia. Being pregnant and working full-time, Open Foundation offered a flexible and free program, which enabled her to juggle responsibilities and create a new life for herself.

“An important factor of my choice was the flexibility and support provided while completing the Open Foundation program,” she said.

Reflecting on her time in Open Foundation, Yasmina found that the academics helped to create relatable content and prepared her with the knowledge and confidence to succeed in undergraduate study.

“Academics possess a wealth of knowledge. The program videos were excellent and so easy to understand. I loved that the content was so relatable,” she said.

“I learnt essential study skills, and it showed me where to get support when I needed it. It also provided me with information about the services available,” she said.

“Within two to three weeks into the program, I had a call from a wellbeing support service. I thought that was incredible because I was not paying for the program, but they still cared about how I was doing and wanted to help me be successful!” she said.

Since completing Open Foundation, Yasmina is now enrolled in a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design and hopes to improve the user experience of digital and interactive designs.
