Moving to Australia at eight years old, Sara began the process of learning a new language. By the time she reached high school, Sara developed an interest in biology and knew this was something she wanted to create a career out of.

“When I discovered the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Newcastle, I knew that this was the right path for me. This program offered a broad range of courses and the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment,” she said.

At the start of her degree, Sara was unsure which avenue she wanted to pursue within the biomedical science industry. She knew human biology was where she wanted to end up, but finding the right area within this would come to light as she carried on with study.

“Since I wasn't entirely sure which specific career I wanted to pursue, this program allowed me to explore different areas of human biology and discover my true passion,” she said.

The extensive course content encouraged Sara to explore a variety of options within the biomedical science program.

“I loved that the program offered a comprehensive overview of the biological sciences, from DNA and genetics to anatomy and physiology, as well as biochemistry and clinical/lab techniques,” she said.

Gaining confidence as she progressed in her laboratory abilities was important for Sara to understand and see the change from when she first started to now.

“I appreciated how each lab session helped me develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while also reinforcing the concepts covered in the classroom,”

“I remember my first lab where I had to pipette coloured water, but I was shaking uncontrollably in fear of messing it up. However, through practice and dedication, I have been able to develop my skills and techniques in the lab. I can now confidently and properly pipette solutions containing DNA into an SDS page,” she said.

Reflecting on the highlights of her degree, Sara recalls the privilege of meeting some of her closest friends through the program.

“We supported each other through the challenges of our coursework and struggled together during exam periods. We have created memories both inside and outside of the classroom that I will forever cherish,” Sara said.

Another highlight was the support she received from peers and academics that allowed her to confidently tackle assessments and placements.

“I am grateful for the hands-on experience that my program has given me, and to have had professors who are passionate about their work and eager to help students achieve their goals,” she said.

Sara stepped out of her comfort zone to serve as president of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science Society (BoBss) for 2023. The BoBss connects current and future students together to create, grow and learn together about the benefits of biomedical science.

“I’m proud of the opportunity to serve as the president of BoBss for 2023. It has been an amazing opportunity to develop my leadership and teamwork skills, while also learning from other students and teachers,” she said.

Sara now knows where she wants to end up in her career: diagnostic imagery, and using ultrasonic technologies is of particular interest to her. Sara feels prepared for whatever the industry may throw at her.

“My degree has provided me with a solid foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will be invaluable in my chosen industry,”

“These practical skills, combined with the theoretical knowledge I have gained in areas such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, have prepared me well for the challenges of working in my chosen industry,” she said.

Thankful for her experience and the skills and knowledge she experienced, Sara is excited for what the future holds and the positive changes she can make to people’s lives.

“I’m drawn to the interpersonal aspect of this career, as it allows me to interact with individuals and hopefully make a positive impact on their physical and emotional wellbeing. I am excited to use my education to help improve the lives of others in a meaningful way,” she said.
