Nishikanta’s academic journey is a testament to dedication and ambition.

Transitioning to on-campus studies in 2021 after eight months of off-campus learning due to the pandemic, Nishikanta is now in his third year of a PhD in Environmental and Occupational Health.

"In my present capacity, I am diligently engaged in both academic and practical pursuits," he shares. Nishikanta is not just focused on his research; he's also gaining practical experience through his association with SafeWork, a division of the NSW government.

His interest in Environmental and Occupational Health was sparked during his MPhil studies, which focused on the occupational health hazards faced by farmers. "This experience ignited my interest in environmental health and safety. Now, I'm privileged to be engaged in a PhD project dedicated to the well-being of farmers and farm workers," Nishikanta explains.

A significant milestone in his academic journey was the acceptance of his scoping review research paper for presentation at the 23rd World Congress on Safety and Health and Work in Sydney. "Over the span of a year, I poured considerable effort into crafting this paper, and its selection for presentation at such an esteemed conference brings me immense joy," he says.

Nishikanta's research aims to explore the health issues faced by farmers and farmworkers due to pesticide use in agriculture. He believes that the feedback from the World Congress will provide fresh perspectives that will enrich his future work.

When asked about his most enjoyable experience at the University of Newcastle, Nishikanta enthusiastically mentions The Forum's amenities, including a gym, swimming pool, and basketball courts.

For those considering studying at the University of Newcastle, Nishikanta has some advice: "Studying here comes with a multitude of advantages, including an array of scholarships and annual research funds from the School of Health Sciences. Plus, the presence of world-class beaches and favourable weather adds a delightful dimension to life alongside your PhD journey."
