Kaho had several options for studying abroad, but her choice was clear: The University of Newcastle. Originating from the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Japan, Kaho sought an exchange program that was highly reputable and located near the beach. "I was told that the Language Centre provides warm support for students from my university in Japan. I aimed to develop practical English skills and gain valuable experiences," she said.

To improve her English, Kaho enrolled in the English Language Bridging Program (ELBP). The smaller class sizes allowed for personalised attention from the instructors. Kaho recalls, "The teacher made an effort to listen to the opinions and questions of every student, creating a close-knit atmosphere."

Reflecting on her experience, Kaho said, "I am grateful that the teacher patiently taught me until I could solve the questions independently. The message card that the teacher gave me on the last day is a treasure from my Australian journey. Through the program, I gained the confidence to use English to communicate with various people and take university courses."

One of the standout features of the ELBP is the award-winning Student Experience Program, which offers students the opportunity to engage with the local community in Newcastle. Kaho particularly enjoyed the speed conversations, stating, "It helped me practice my speaking and listening skills. Although challenging, it was beneficial because I had to express myself using my limited vocabulary. This experience helped me overcome my hesitation to speak in English."

Discussing her favourite aspects of living in Newcastle and its proximity to Sydney, Kaho said, "I explored the Blue Mountains and tried surfing at Bondi Beach. The city, which changes its character with the seasons, fascinated me."
