Dyi Shin, an international student from Malaysia is passionate about sustainability. This passion has guided him to pursue a Master of Architecture at the University of Newcastle, where he had the opportunity to learn from global leaders in the field through regular presentations and interactions with visiting architects and experts.

One of Dyi’s favourite aspects of studying at the university was the opportunity to engage with his professors. He found it intriguing and enriching to have conversations with knowledgeable individuals, as they provided valuable insights and perspectives.

“My favourite thing about studying at the University is to be able to mingle with the professors. It intrigues me, every time I speak to them” Dyi said.

The University is committed to providing the best learning experience for its students, because of this Dyi has had the opportunity to work collaboratively in a vibrant and engaged design community that revolves around the Architectural Design Studio, Workshop, and Makerspace. This environment exposes him to real architecture in a hands-on manner, going beyond what he would typically find in books.

“It’s an eye-opening experience where we get to be exposed to real architecture, that would normally be in books” he says.

The University provides a well-equipped workshop that is shared by different schools, offering access to various tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and other resources. This facilitates a more hands-on approach to learning, allowing Dyi to be a more practical and skillful student rather than solely focusing on conceptual aspects.

“We have a big workshop in the Uni … shared by different schools. Access to laser cutters, 3D printers, and whatever tools we can find … it helps us to be more of a hands-on making student rather than more conceptual” he shares.
