Claire graduated from high school in 2019 and gained early entry into a Bachelor of Biomedical Science. Feeling ready to take on the world through a gap year, then jump into her secure place in a degree and university life. Then COVID struck and her plans changed.

“My exciting gap year turned into a year of no international travel, full-time working and preparing for starting uni in 2021. I always knew I wanted to go to [the University of] Newcastle because I heard the science degrees and School were strong and there was a lot of support for STEM students in general,” she said.

Having always had an interest in science, Claire wanted to know more about the human body, the way it works and what happens when it doesn’t work anymore.

“I love that there is so much more to learn and discover. I was also drawn to the endless job opportunities a Biomedical Science degree would give me in a variety of medical and health care fields,” she said.

A highlight of her degree has been the support offered through the student society. This has given her an opportunity to talk to other professionals and be inspired by what they are achieving in their careers.

“Being involved in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science Society (BoBSS) as a student member, and later as a club executive, has given me many opportunities to connect with my peers outside of labs and lectures,” she said.

Claire has been given the opportunity to complete an international exchange semester in Canada, which she is looking forward to.

“Later this year I’ll be travelling to McMaster University in Canada. I’m excited to gain a different perspective of Biomedical Science and see how they do university life,” she said.

Reflecting on her practical experience so far, Claire has been involved in volunteer projects with researchers through HMRI to explore what a career in research could look like.

“I got to work with both pre-clinical and clinical research teams and explore various types of research that I might be interested to pursue in the future,” she said.

Claire feels confident to step into a career in biomedical science  through the professional connections she has formed and encouragement from her academics while studying

“This knowledge and practical preparation has made me excited to work within a team of like-minded people, passionate about learning and improving human medicine and treatments,” she said.
