Cecilia did a lot of research before selecting the University of Newcastle to complete her Bachelor of Visual Communication Design. After originally studying at another Australian university, she found that a new environment was needed to foster her creative ideas – and Newcastle had what she was looking for.

“I was keen to learn about design and art, to help broaden my perspectives and enhance my technical skills for better self-expression. “At first, I was attracted by this city's gorgeous beaches, pleasant weather, and support the University provides for international students. After I was informed that I had received a China Excellence Scholarship, I accepted the offer without hesitation,” said Cecilia.

The difference a scholarship can make in the lives of international students is significant. Which is why the University of Newcastle has dedicated scholarships to support our international cohort. For Cecilia, finding out she was awarded a scholarship made both a financial and personal impact.

“I received a phone call from the University informing me that I had been offered the scholarship. I was delighted and shared the good news with my parents immediately and told them I must go to this University to complete my studies as I feel what I got was not only a scholarship, but also confidence and recognition.

“That was the first time I felt deserving of something, the scholarship not only brings me money, but also a positive attitude towards myself,” said Cecilia.

Since commencing her studies, Cecilia has been able to broaden her horizons, explore new skills and widen her career possibilities.

“We have many chances to meet senior designers, or team leaders in local creative industries. As an international student, connecting with local industries is a good chance for us to seek more opportunities for future careers.

“While doing this program at the University of Newcastle, I discovered my communication skills could be beneficial to my future career. I’ve decided I want to find a job in UI/UX design field, aiming to solve problems and build better experiences,” said Cecilia.

Looking back, coming to the University of Newcastle has been a life-changing experience for Cecilia. “Coming to the University of Newcastle was one of my best choices in life. The teachers combine design principles and practical learning together which is vital in my future career. Additionally, I can experience the authentic Australian atmosphere instead of walking into a classroom where everyone speaks Chinese. If students want to experience an authentic Aussie lifestyle and sincerely want to slow down to focus on study, coming to the University of Newcastle couldn’t be a better choice,” Cecilia concluded.
