An Binh VU comes to University of Newcastle from Hai Phong, Vietnam to study the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. Loving the creative and mechanical aspects of his degree, Binh hopes to build helpful machinery in the future.

Studying in Australia was completely different to Vietnam, Binh recalls researching the degree online and experiencing the learning opportunities once commencing.

“Studying in Australia is totally difference compared to Vietnam. I found tutorials and workshops are very helpful as I could learn from not only the lecturer, but also from peers,” he said.

During his study, Binh received the Academic Excellence Scholarship Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies scholarship to assist with the payment of his degree further relieving the financial burden.

“I was very happy to find out. I called my wife immediately. As an international student, I pay around AU$40,000 a year. This scholarship means a lot to me,” he said.

Recalling the opportunities provided by this scholarship, Binh has had the chance to have lunch with the Vice Chancellor and talk with other recipients, including the opportunity to join the iLead program.

“I have chance to know someone who could help me in the future. In addition, some people know about me, so it’s a good setting up before I graduate,” he said.

Binh has plans to work within different mechanical field companies before deciding on the type of work to complete.

"I am trying to apply for some training jobs from now on. Hopefully, when I graduate, I have a little experience so I can find a job easier. After that, I will decide which type of work I would do,” he said.
