Moving to Newcastle from a small town in rural Victoria, Adam completed his HSC with only seven other students. Now in his second year of a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, he has found his passion.

“I was drawn to my current program because of the versatile opportunities that the Bachelor of Biomedical Science offers. It allowed me to enter the degree, with no specific idea of what field I would like to pursue as a career and offer me a wide and varied opportunity to experience numerous careers,” he said.

A highlight of his degree so far has been learning new capabilities and relating them to a variety of potential careers.

“The ability to learn new skills and teach me all the relevant knowledge to enter any human science, or general science, field of work has been a highlight so far. It also has helped me to develop many interpersonal skills that will be relevant in any future career,” he said.

With the potential to complete work experience in both domestic and international locations, Adam has seen the prospects Biomedical Science can offer.

“I have found numerous opportunities that are available to me domestically, allowing me to still develop my skills and see what future opportunities await me both domestically and internationally!” he said.

Adam also expanded his skills outside the classroom by joining the iGem and AusSynBio teams through connections with the University of Newcastle Synthetic Biology Club and the DeNovocastrians, a dedicated undergraduate and postgraduate society for research students.

“Being part of the amazing team that is working on a project that we can take to competitions in Canberra, and potentially Paris, whilst developing crucial laboratory and professional skills that will be instrumental to gaining other equally exciting opportunities in my near future,” he said.

Throughout Adam’s program, there have been many mentors to inspire him to continue learning and growing within the biomedical science field.

“All the time academics have taken to developing my existing laboratory skills and teach me things that I wouldn’t have dreamt possible many years ago. The DeNovocastrian’s team are all a huge support to me as well, helping me to develop all the interpersonal skills needed in science,” he said.

“The most exciting moment I have had was when I did my first day at the university and the realisation hit me that I had been accepted into my preference university and course and I could go on and do whatever I wanted to do.”

Reflecting on what he has accomplished so far, Adam is excited to see where this degree will take him and how he can continue to grow within this industry.

“I am proud of my achievements and growth in every aspect of my life including my knowledge/studies, my skills in the laboratory, and that I had the ability to meet all the amazing people surrounding me in my degree,” he said.
