Originally studying a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering in 2013, Tambalyn Durney soon realised that his true passion lay with science.

“I found myself in an ecology role and quickly decided scientists have more fun.

“After working in the field, I made the wise switch to Environmental Science and Management. The last two years of my degree I studied and worked full time at an acoustics consultancy,” he said.

After completing his bachelor's degree, Tambalyn never thought he would go back to studying.

However, wanting to expand his skills and learn new things, he enrolled into the Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

“It’s applicable to my current role as an environmental scientist at an environmental consultancy, so with any luck it will further my career progression,” he said.

Seeing the flexibility for students through the online offering, and the need for environmental sustainability, Tambalyn was excited to start his next study chapter.

“I’ve been doing my masters in trimesters and all online. The flexibility has been really good,” he said.

Tambalyn recalls the relevance his study has already had with his current role and his hopes to move into a more managerial position in the future.

“Much of the course material has been relevant to my current career and has helped my overall professional development.

“It’s opened my eyes to a few things and allowed me to build a unique perspective,” Tambalyn said.

Describing one of the highlights of his study, Tambalyn says connections and friendships cannot be underestimated.

“Throughout my degree I’ve always made an active effort to make connections and maintain them. Networking can go a long way to making life so much easier,” he said.

Completing his master's whilst being able to work full-time has offered extra flexibility. Tambalyn encourages others thinking of studying to plan their program.

“Not to sound too dramatic, but Environmental Management and Sustainability is fundamental to the survival of this planet, and every species on it.

This is why I chose to work in an environmental field, because effective leadership and environmental management is needed,” Tambalyn said.
