With a Bachelor of Biomedical Science under her belt – and a climate crisis looming – Mia decided to channel her passion for the environment into studying the Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

Mia wanted to explore “the impact climate change is having, and will continue to have on our planet.”

“One of my favourite courses has been Impact Assessment and Climate Change Policy. It was eye-opening learning about the science of climate change and climate change mitigation. I have also learnt about the IPCC reports, which you may hear about on the news, but don’t value the importance of it until you dive further into it,” she said.

The degree is also a smart choice, employment-wise. With jobs in high environmental impact areas forecasted to grow strongly over the next decade, graduates are in higher demand. The shorter length of the Master’s program also appealed to Mia.

“I wanted to learn more about issues that are important to me, without studying another three-year undergraduate degree,” she said.

Alongside study, Mia works as a Research and Administrative Assistant at the Hunter Medical Research Institute. Having the flexibility to work full-time in medical research and study part-time has made all the difference.

“I think it’s important to be organised. Until now all my courses have been online, meaning I could study after work and on the weekends. I now have an in-class lecture on Friday afternoons. This has been my first time studying at the city campus, which has been great as I can walk there from my home,” said Mia.

At the beginning of the year, Mia even managed to juggle studying while visiting family in Germany for three weeks.

“I was extremely thankful for this level of flexibility,” she said.

While she’s not certain where she’ll land after graduating, Mia is passionate about applying her newfound knowledge to create real and lasting change.

“I am still looking for an ideal career path, but I’m only early into my Master’s,” she said.
