Alumna Katrina, graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2013, with a combined Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business, majoring in International Business (Distinction).

She now leads the legal team at Greenpeace Australia Pacific.

“My work involves protecting the rights of climate activists and helping teams leverage the law to create stronger environmental campaigns and precedents.

“I also work as a Broadcast News Journalist where I analyse political, economic and business developments which impact global markets and provide market commentary on equity and commodity movements,” Katrina said.

Part of Katrina’s practical experience within her degree involved undertaking a cultural exchange in Japan, as part of the University's collaboration with Shohoku College and the Sony Institute. She also embraced many opportunities for real-world experience here in Australia.

“I undertook work experience in the criminal law team at Legal Aid, worked for a boutique law firm and volunteered at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre,” Katrina said.

Whether it be the Annual Law Ball, or walking on stage at graduation, Katrina has had many exciting moments during her studies.

“The most memorable moments are the little ones, like joining my comrades at a café to unwind between classes and finding lifelong friends during orientation week,” Katrina said.

Katrina believes the University offers “a supportive and flexible learning environment with a social justice focus,” which can be beneficial when applying for jobs.

“When applying for jobs, it became clear that the University has a great reputation for producing graduates with strong legal research skills and practical experience. In addition, the University nurtures a strong and supportive network of academics and lawyers who I am still in contact with today,” Katrina said.
