Corey, a registered nurse has always been passionate about challenging the stigma around mental health. After three years of work in the acute mental health setting, Corey wanted to increase his knowledge in mental health to be able to provide quality care to patients. He chose the Master of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Newcastle to take his career to the next step.

“I have always been passionate about challenging the stigma around mental health as many people don’t get the help they need due to barriers and misconceptions.”

Corey chose the University of Newcastle because it was recommended by many industry professionals.

“I chose the University of Newcastle as many fellow mental health nurses recommended it. They had positive experiences as studying online at UON while working. Many colleagues have been promoted to higher grade nursing duties since completing their master’s degree.”

Although this was recommended to Corey and provided some clear pathways into higher grade duties, it was the flexibility of the degree that really appealed to him.

“The flexibility of studying this degree drew me in. I was able to work full-time while completing my studies online.”

So far, Corey has learnt a lot and has been able to apply this in his current job. Furthermore, it has allowed him to take up more workplace opportunities.

“Some key highlights of my degree were applying the theory into practice at the workplace.”

Corey has been accepted into a professional development workshop, which provides a pathway to working as a Clinical Nurse Consultant within the emergency department.

This has provided him with a higher sense of direction in terms of the next steps for his career.
