Creating positive learning experiences
After a number of years teaching in the mainstream sector, Andrew decided to forge a different path in his teaching career, wanting to focus on students with special needs, specifically children and young people with emotional disturbance and behavioural issues.
Andrew decided to pursue the Master of Special and Inclusive Education to enhance his knowledge and skills and to make a positive impact on his students.
“This program provided me with the experience and official qualifications to achieve my goal of working with students with special needs in either support classes within mainstream school settings and/or Schools for Specific Purposes (SSP), specifically in the area of Emotional Disturbance (ED) or Behavioural Issues (BD).”
By studying the Master of Special and Inclusive Education, Andrew was able to learn, research and implement skills on the job, whilst providing tailored support to his students, and also their families.
“I have gained valuable insights into current literature and best practice which directly influences my current teaching practice. I am aspiring to continue to work with students in support classes, focusing on providing students with the individual support they require through creating a positive learning environment where genuine, positive relationships are fostered."
We asked Andrew why he chose Postgrad study at the University of Newcastle.
“The structure of the course provided me with the flexibility I needed to fit in working full time. And, although I am studying online, I felt that having the university nearby may provide added benefits such as ease of accessing information/ support at the actual campus.”
