Currently rounding out her third year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), Janita is driven by a desire to create change and make the world better.

“For as long as I can remember, when asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, my only answer was ‘I don’t know, I just want to help people’.

“I think the most exciting thing about my degree is that as an engineer, I will be in the perfect position to help people.

“I know that once I graduate I will be able to make a real difference to those around me, which makes the late nights studying worth it.”

It also helps to have the University’s globally-recognised team of engineering professionals mentoring you along the way.

“The University of Newcastle has an incredible engineering faculty – my lecturers are world-class researchers, yet they always have time for students.”

Janita says the University’s focus on networking and real-world experience has alllowed her to thrive – and even helped her secure an internship with Hunter Water.

“One of the most valuable things I have gotten from studying at the University of Newcastle was the chance to network with researchers and professionals from the field of chemical engineering from the first day of university.”

“Just by going to a free BBQ in the engineering courtyard I met someone who introduced me to the person who offered me my internship.”

“The University and the engineering faculty team give students so many opportunities to meet other engineers and form lasting relationships within the industry.”

Through her internship, Janita is able to apply her theoretical knowledge, gain valuable professional experience, and see first-hand the impact her work can have on communities.

“I am currently working in the water treatment division at Hunter Water. My role includes working alongside the team of engineers who are responsible for providing most of Newcastle, the Hunter Region and Lake Macquarie.”

“It has been an incredible experience to see just how much hard work and processing goes into ensuring that, when a tap is turned on, clean water comes out.”

“I’m loving using my engineering degree to positively impact my community.”

Janita has also embraced the opportunity to take her studies global. Last July she spent a month studying at one of the University’s partner institutions in Lyon, France.

“I studied project management and innovation with a group of international students, teaching me how to work with a multicultural group of people while learning the importance of global collaboration.

“I got to meet engineering students from literally all over the world in a beautiful country with amazing food. The trip was something I could never have afforded myself, but because of my status as a student at UON, my course fees were reduced and I was able to get scholarships to cover travel expenses.”

“I even met a French girl who was doing work experience with Veolia, a company who I had previously worked for – it turns out she did the exact same internship as me – just on the other side of the planet.”
