A passion for food and human health led Ludwina on a journey to becoming a People’s Choice winner of the University of Newcastle’s Food Expo 2020.

Keen to take advantage of world-class facilities and international industry experience, Ludwina enrolled in the Bachelor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia. The dual-degree program, partnered with the University of Newcastle, enabled her to study in Australia as part of her degree.

She commenced studying with the University of Newcastle during the COVID pandemic. With travel restrictions in place, she had to complete her studies online instead. However, despite the distance, her experience and engagement in the course was truly amazing.

Ludwina took part in an annual food competition held at the University’s Ourimbah campus. She maintained almost daily contact with her teammates. Drawing on each other’s knowledge, skills and expertise, the team came up with innovative ideas for food products and took out the People’s Choice award for 2020 – an amazing outcome considering that Ludwina hadn’t yet stepped foot on the Ourimbah campus.

This global virtual collaboration highlights the ability of food to unite people together.

“I loved working with my teammates,” Ludwina said.

“They were all very nice and I was also able to learn a lot from them. It was so exciting and rewarding to win the award after all the hard work we put into the project,” she said.

Ludwina enjoyed how practical the course was, especially the food product development course, which gave her a glimpse of what working in research and development would be like. Additionally, she did not expect to gain so many new marketing skills.

“The skills I learned are really useful for working in business and marketing jobs in the food industry or if I was to open my own food and beverage business,” Ludwina said.

Ludwina was also recently awarded the highly competitive Summer Vacation Scholarship, which offers recipients the opportunity to take part in a six-week research program and undertake current research directly relating to their studies. Utilising the skills she has honed this Semester, Ludwina will be working alongside leading academic, Dr Tamara Bucher.
