20-year-old Juliette was home-schooled, right up until the end of year 10. When she finished school, she assumed she’d never study again. But after a year of working, travelling and completing some short courses, it became apparent to Juliette that she wanted to pursue a career in Nursing.

“I completed NewStep in 2019, which then opened the door to my degree. I chose Nursing because I love working with people, especially young children and babies.

“A huge highlight so far has been meeting like-minded people who encourage me and help me to stay motivated. Everyone I’ve met in my Nursing cohort are so friendly and caring. We love having a good chat before classes start,” Juliette explained.

Studying at university has taught Juliette an abundance of new skills, from understanding how to communicate more professionally, to learning about the ways in which the body functions.

“Studying Nursing has really helped me gain all the abilities necessary to succeed in the field. I am learning how to care for people and treat them in a specialised way.

“The most enjoyable moments are the lightbulb moments - understanding a new concept or idea. Every teacher I’ve had so far has been so encouraging, inspirational and caring. Our tutors are extremely knowledgeable and are always passing on their wisdom, to help us learn new skills,” said Juliette.

Having worked at a day-care centre in her gap year, Juliette was well acquainted with what it’s like to work with children.

“I would love to be a paediatric nurse, and eventually become a midwife, or maybe even a paramedic! I can’t see myself working in one discipline forever, so I’d love to keep learning new skills and moving from ward to ward,” said Juliette.

In the years to come, Juliette hopes to both study and work internationally.

“My goal is to do some missionary work overseas in smaller communities and hospitals. Maybe I’ll even open up a small hospital of my own too!” concluded Juliette.
