Postgraduate catapults Jeremy into the field of green tech
Jeremy was working as an engineer within the defence industry, after having graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2015. But after some time, he realised that his career wasn’t going in the direction he wanted. So, he returned to the University of Newcastle to enrol in a Master of Professional Engineering (Electrical and Electronic).
What inspired his decision was the chance to learn some of the more difficult, technical skills that were only available within postgraduate studies, but which he felt could launch him into the area he wanted to pursue within engineering.
“The postgraduate courses focus on the most technical and difficult side of engineering and make up some of the most important content,” says Jeremy. “It allowed me to access fully equipped laboratories and get hands-on experience and training with specialised lab equipment.”
After completing his masters, he secured a role with 3ME Technology as an Embedded Systems Engineer, developing high-capacity energy storage systems for electric vehicles in the mining, military and marine industries.
“The most exciting, enjoyable and difficult experience I’ve had during my degree has been completing the Master of Professional Engineering Thesis project. To take a project brief that you developed with your supervisor and turn it into a valid and complete project, with software, hardware, and computer modelling has been a challenging experience – but it’s really shown me what I am capable of as an engineer.”
Jeremy offers this advice to other students thinking of studying postgraduate: “Take every opportunity to push yourself to your limits as a student. If there is a course that you feel could be something you’re really interested in, don’t be afraid to take it. Speak to your course coordinators and your peers, find out how you can best prepare yourself for the course and go for it.”
Jeremy used postgraduate study to pivot in his career field and to explore exciting new applications of technology. Where his degree takes him next is anyone’s guess but he’s proud of the personal and career growth he’s had so far.
