For Amy, studying a Master of Dispute Resolution while working in the field has equipped her with new perspectives, advanced knowledge, and innovative dispute management techniques, positioning her at the forefront of this rapidly growing specialisation.

After graduating from a Bachelor of Arts, Amy went on to complete her Master of Business Administration in 2011. She currently leads a career in risk management in the local government sector.

“I focus on building trust with parties, establishing empathy and understanding, and getting them to focus on the problem, not the people – so this degree really resonated with me,” said Amy.

“I started out wanting to be a lawyer, but I’ve been really attracted to the human elements of dispute resolution – the fact that we don’t necessarily need to go to court at all, if we can give people the tools and the insights to understand what it is we all need to feel safe, to reduce stress and conflict, and achieve more satisfying relationships.”

For Amy, taking on another postgraduate degree has been a huge confidence boost, and has fueled her passion for strategic conflict resolution.

“Getting back to uni has been an incredibly positive experience for me. You benefit so much, both personally and professionally from the course – it’s been fantastic.

“It’s a really awesome opportunity to build confidence, and develop the tools to negotiate difficult conversations in your personal or professional life.

“You develop new techniques to approach and tackle a lot of different issues.

“Plus, the teaching staff are genuinely passionate about the topics, and share a lot of really valuable life experience as well.”

Amy says at its core, the Master of Dispute Resolution is helping create better, more strategic, and more collaborative negotiators and problem-solvers.

“(It’s about) learning to take control, become more action focused and change your mindset. It’s really exciting.”
