Study Creative Industries

What you will study

The University of Newcastle’s Master of Creative Industries is centered on practice-based research and investigation combining practical, creative and entrepreneurial courses to align your creative skills with the most progressive industries. Our core courses focus on practical approaches to thinking about your creative processes and output. At the core of the program are three Innovation Labs designed to support the development of a single project that serves your creativity. The core innovation labs include:

  • Thinking it Through: explore the fundamental approaches that underpin the development of an innovation. Draw on ideas and practices such as interdisciplinary, creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to identify problems and opportunities that give rise to innovation.
  • Making It Happen: access facilities and opportunities to engage in real world or speculative creative projects that address the complexities typically encountered by creative industry professionals.
  • Making it Known: work closely with your academic supervisor and collaborators to realise how the outcomes of your work are presented, published and made known in the professional and academic context.

The above core courses are coupled with a broad range of exciting directed courses in your chosen field of study. You can play to your existing strengths or explore a new area of knowledge when selecting your directed courses, with the opportunity to take elective coursework in the following areas:

  • creative writing
  • creative and performing arts
  • music
  • design communication
  • information technology
