Transforming HR and Culture at the University of Newcastle

Chief People and Culture Officer
Martin commenced his appointment as Chief People and Culture Office for the University of Newcastle in March 2020 and was tasked with the responsibility of leading a transformation of the institution’s approach to HR, aligned with its new strategic priority of ‘Inspiring People’. Since that time Martin has also been heavily involved in supporting the University’s response to the COVID pandemic and the finalisation of new Enterprise Agreements for professional and academic staff.
Martin has over 25 years as a HR professional across a wide range of roles across both the public and private sectors. This includes roles in Commonwealth and NSW government organisations, including over 15 years in public health in NSW, a former top 100 company as well as roles with a union and employer association.
Prior to joining the University of Newcastle, Martin was the Executive Director of People and Culture for NSW Health Pathology where he was part of a small team that led the establishment of the organisation in 2011 and was subsequently appointed to lead the establishment of a high performing HR function for the organisation and drive significant organisational and cultural change as part of the organisations Executive Team.
Martin was also a member of the TAFE NSW Northern Region, Regional Advisory Committee and Australian Human Resources Institute mentor.
Martin has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Newcastle, a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) from Macquarie University and a Master of Labour Law and Relations from the University of Sydney.
