Rebecca Silberberg works to provide advice within the junction of law and technology to some of the world’s largest technology companies.

“I was initially drawn to working in tech just out of intellectual curiosity, but I stayed because of the power technology can have on people’s lives,” Rebecca said.

“It felt really impactful to be working as part of a team that works on products that are both really helpful and socially responsible.”

Now working as Senior Counsel for Google Play in California, Rebecca listens to Product Managers, Engineers and UX Designers to glean all she can about Google Play’s products. She then proceeds to advise the tech giant on a range of technological innovations and legal issues with quick-thinking, responsive legal guidance.

Whilst establishing a name for herself in the space where technology and law collide, Rebecca has also applied her problem-solving skills and critical thinking towards Pro Bono work.

“You have certain skills and abilities, and you can use those to help others. Early on in my career, I realised I had communication skills that I could use to help clients to write letters. I had skills in navigating administrative processes that clients didn’t have,” said Rebecca.

During her time as a leading lawyer in Baker and Mckenzie’s Pro Bono team, Rebecca was recognised as a “Pro Bono Champion”. She has also volunteered at a number of legal organisations including Cancer Patients’ Legal Service and the Refugee Advice and Casework Service.

Rebecca credits her time at the University of Newcastle and its Legal Centre for developing her strong skillset and setting her apart from fellow junior lawyers.

“Studying law at the University of Newcastle really instilled in me that law is not merely an academic pursuit… it has real and practical consequences for people and society at large and therefore requires pragmatism. From those early days, we were taught to problem solve above all else. And ultimately, this need to problem solve has fuelled me in every job or career move I have had ever since.”

“I think these days when you're operating in the space between the evolution of technology and the evolution of the law, being practical and a problem solver and more important than ever,” said Rebecca.
