The Alumni Medal - 2020

Professor Gail Garvey is a proud Kamilaroi woman from NSW, whose strong leadership and collaborative approach has brought Indigenous consumers, researchers, and clinicians together to achieve common goals. Professor Garvey's leadership led to the first National Roundtable identifying research priorities in cancer for Indigenous Australians and the establishment of the National Indigenous Cancer Network.

She also instigated and convened the inaugural World Indigenous Cancer Conference in partnership with the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC), an intergovernmental agency forming part of the World Health Organization of the United Nations. Additionally, Professor Garvey has established an international collaborative research program with IARC on cancer and Indigenous people globally. Since 2012, Professor Garvey has received research grant funding totalling over $30million, 42% as CIA including two NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence.

Professor Garvey leads work in psychosocial aspects of cancer care for Indigenous Australians. She is also leading a program of work to understand and measure the relevant dimensions of wellbeing for Indigenous adults and adolescents.
