Newton-John Alumni Medal - 2019

In 2012, Rosemarie Milsom, who was then working as a full-time journalist at the Newcastle Herald and juggling two small children, created and launched the inaugural Newcastle Writers Festival.

As a long-time feature writer and in the face of widespread job losses within the print media, she was eager to shine a spotlight on the value of good writing, create a community event that championed literature and provide a platform for the region’s emerging and established writers.

The first event was held in April 2013 and was driven by Rosemarie’s hard work and passion. The seventh festival, held in April 2019, attracted 12,000 people, and is now the largest cultural event in the Hunter region, and one of the largest regional literary festivals in Australia.
