About the artwork:
Bulaguy Miranggul (Saltbush) 2024
Acrylic markers on canvas
The artwork serves as a powerful tribute to the 60th anniversary of the University of Newcastle. The footprint motif symbolises the collective journey of students and leaders who have flourished within the University's nurturing environment. It embodies the spirit of growth, learning, and success, all made possible by the University's commitment to its reconciliation plan for Aboriginal and First Nations students and families.
Bulaguy Miranggul meaning Saltbush, is used as a herb for medicine and recognised as a place that red kangaroo (ganhur) and other animals would rest. Its inclusion in the piece is significant. Saltbush found throughout NSW—from the coast to the bush, from rivers to seas—represents the shared connection of communities. It highlights collaboration and unity, reinforcing how we come together to create greatness for our future. This plant is not just a symbol of resilience and nourishment; it embodies our ways of knowing and learning, integral to our identity.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
