Research at the University of Newcastle

The University of Newcastle is a research intensive university with a reputation for excellence and a strong and vibrant research culture. Our research work is recognised for its impact and relevance to the region, the nation and the international community.

We are dedicated to creating and strengthening partnerships with industry and other significant institutions/organisations to maximise research outcomes. We are especially proud of the contributions the University is making through our Centres of Excellence and Co-operative Research Centres, and their involvement with industry partners. We have strong links with local health bodies and the community through the Hunter Medical Research Institute – the only medical research institute in regional Australia. The success of TUNRA, the University's commercial arm, in transferring research outcomes to commercial reality is highly regarded.

Our Indigenous Higher Education Research Unit (Umulliko) takes the leading role and is recognised for the relevance of its research and its impact on Indigenous issues.

The University of Newcastle is consistently ranked in the top 10 of 36 universities in Australia for its research effort and outcomes. Some areas of the university rank well above this level.
