• Research centres and institutes 

All research degree candidates require a supervisor. As a prospective RHD student, it is a good idea to start actively searching for potential supervisors in your chosen field before you submit your application.

You can shortlist and connect with University of Newcastle academics through our supervisor register. The register will give you an excellent overview of potential supervisors including:

• Name, title and email address
• Summary of research areas
• A link to their research profile which details biographical information, research, teaching and administrative expertise, research funding, current and past research degree supervision and research publications.

There are three ways of searching.

1. By school name: use this field if you would like to see the full list of available supervisors in a broad area.
2. By researcher name: use this field if you know the surname of a particular researcher.
3. By keywords: use this field to enter the keyword(s) that describes your research interest.

To search for a particular phrase in the keyword search, enclose your keywords in double quotation marks. For example "clean coal" will only return results that contain the exact phrase "clean coal". If you enter keywords without the double quotation marks the search engine will return results with either one or both key words.

Domestic applicants

Registration

Domestic applicants can now apply online for a research degree. The first step is to register your details and be given login details. Please register here.

Complete your application online

Once you have registered, complete your online application.

International applicants

Complete the International research higher degree application form, attach your documents and post to:

Closing dates are not enforced for most research degree applications, with successful candidates able to commence studies on almost any weekday of the year.

Please note, a closing date of the first Friday in October each year (for admission in the following calendar year) is applicable to the following two degrees:

• PhD Clinical Psychology
• PhD Health Psychology

Closing dates do also apply for scholarship applications:

• 31 October for domestic applicants
• 31 August each year for international applicants

Your application will be sent to the relevant faculty and school for an academic assessment and determination. Approval requires that:

• an applicant is appropriately qualified
• there are projects available within the applicant’s areas of research interest
• the school can provide supervision and resources

Assessment times can vary. Please allow around six weeks and we'll advise the outcome by email.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application via email and hard copy letter. If you are made an offer you can accept it online at http://myhub.newcastle.edu.au. If deferral is possible this will be indicated in your offer letter. The letter will outline your program, supervisory arrangements and other details relevant to your initial enrolment.

Conditions may be placed on an offer of admission such as enrolment in prescribed courses. The offer may also be conditional upon receipt of further evidence from you. It is important that you attend to any conditions promptly to avoid delays in commencement.

If a scholarship application has also been submitted separate advice will be provided regarding its outcome. First round scholarship offers will be made in mid to late December and must be accepted within 28 days.
