Newcastle graduate makes a difference in war-torn South East Asia

Since graduating from the University of Newcastle in 2006, Hayley Mackay has had an impressive career in media production. But it was her passion for social justice that led to her first documentary film, ‘Living with Land Mines’.

“The documentary tells the story of what life is like for those that have been affected by explosive remnants of war. Many people are dying as a result of bombs and land mines that have been left behind after years of war,” Hayley said (pictured in bomb safety gear while filming).

“The aim of the documentary is to raise awareness of the situation and the amazing work that is being done by a number of Non Government Organisations to fix the problem. “

Hayley’s career has taken her around the globe and her achievements include beating thousands of people to be offered a job at ESPN in New York and working as a producer on Channel Ten’s sports and news programs where she covered the Commonwealth Games in India and other major sporting events. She currently works as a producer for SBS television.

Hayley credits her time spent at the University of Newcastle with giving her the options and tools for success.

“When I left school I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do. I chose a social science degree as it gave me the flexibility to choose a number of subjects from a variety of different areas. I did everything from law to media studies. I really enjoyed the media subjects, especially film classes.”
