Community spirit was strong in the air when University of Newcastle students and staff stepped out to show their support for the 2012 Hastings Relay for Life.
Three teams of Port Macquarie campus Bachelor of Nursing students, graduates, staff members and their families raised over $3,500 for the Cancer Council, exceeding their 2011 fundraising efforts.
They also embraced the opportunity to showcase some of their skills during the Healthy Living Expo, by taking blood pressure and pulse checks of relay participants.
Team spokesperson Raelene Kenny said the teams were delighted with their fundraising tally.
“In addition to the web-based donations, our fundraising efforts included selling Cadbury chocolates, and holding a barbecue and second hand book sale, all of which were well supported by team members and students on campus,” she said.
Ms Kenny said the teams appreciated the University’s support in their endeavour.
“We look forward to flying the University of Newcastle flag again in 2013.”
