The University of Newcastle is the most research intensive university outside of an Australian capital city. Ranked ninth among Australia’s universities for research, Newcastle’s reputation is for innovation, excellence and research with impact.
Our strengths are concentrated in the fields of health, energy and resources. The University's world-leading researchers work across 15 Priority Research Centres, and University centres and research institutes.

The University has an international reputation for research excellence, and is distrinctive in the Australian higher education sector as the most research-intensive university outside a capital city. We attract strong support from the government and the private sector for research programs, maintaining a consistent ranking in the country's top 10 universities for research funding.
The University, in partnership with Hunter New England Health and the community, forms the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), the only major medical research institute in regional Australia. Through HMRI, the Hunter has an international reputation for groundbreaking medical research. In 2012, researchers previously based at Newcastle's David Maddison building relocated to the new $90 million HMRI building at Rankin Park. The building was designed to promote the translation of laboratory-based findings into improved clinical care. The modern, open-pan layout encourages researchers to develop collaborations, both internally and globally and fuel the continued growth of the Institute.
The Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) address national priorities in sustainability and energy, producing a range of solutions for sustainable production and energy use. Unrivalled in Australia in scale and the quality of research infrastructure, NIER is located at the former BHP-Billiton Newcastle Research Laboratories, a 3.8 hectare site adjoining the University's Callaghan campus.
Through our commercial business arm, Newcastle Innovation, our researchers are supported in their efforts to transfer their knowledge, technological developments and scientific research into market-ready, economically valuable commodities. Each year Newcastle Innovation generates $16 million in intellectual property, consulting and research income.
In the 2011 Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) the University reported a total audited external research income of $84.96 million for 2010, an increase of 11.4 per cent on 2009.
