Research and innovation
The University of Newcastle is a research intensive university and a leading contributor to research in Australia and the world. Across many discipline areas, our researchers are making discoveries that offer solutions to some of the world's greatest challenges.
We are ranked in the top 10 Australian universities based on research excellence.
An established research leader in engineering, energy and resources, health and medicine, the University of Newcastle is translating outstanding research into great innovation, through the work of our flagship research institutes - the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) - and our Priority Research Centres.
We are also developing our capacity in a number of other fields including social sciences, creative industries and defence.
Focus on the future
Our commitment to research excellence is an investment in the future. In partnership with industry, business and government we will attract the world's best researchers and global innovation leaders.
By supporting our existing partnerships and expanding our fields of research through new collaborations, we will build our research capacity and continue to push the boundaries of innovation and discovery.
We will support new discipline areas that take on the challenge of building scale and focus, such as creative industries and the humanities.
Under our NeW Directions: Research and Innovation Plan, we will deliver research and innovation clusters that strengthen multidisciplinary research and enhance knowledge transfer capability, specifically within the Central Coast and Hunter regions.
These clusters bring together experts from different fields to work with researchers to develop innovative solutions based on the latest discoveries. A cluster offers a one-stop-shop for business, industry and government partners.
