Occupational Health and Safety Nursing in the Meat Processing Industry
Occupational health and safety nurses play a pivotal role in injury prevention and health promotion within high-risk sectors such as meat processing. These professionals are uniquely positioned to assess worker health, coordinate pre-employment assessments, provide early intervention, and deliver ongoing workplace health education. In physically demanding environments where workers are frequently exposed to repetitive strain, sharp tools, and hazardous machinery, OHS nurses serve as frontline advocates for safe practices, ergonomic adjustments, and the identification of musculoskeletal vulnerabilities before they escalate into injuries. Their contribution extends beyond individual care; they help shape inclusive health policies, especially for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) workers, and support employers in meeting regulatory compliance. Integrating OHS nursing expertise into the implementation of Pre-Employment Assessments (PEAs) can enhance their effectiveness, ensuring that assessments are both clinically relevant and culturally sensitive. As this study suggests, embedding nurses within occupational health programs not only strengthens early risk identification but also fosters a culture of safety and care that improves retention, morale, and overall workplace well-being.
