Career Summary

Biography

Cameron Beard, M. Bld., B.ConMgt (Hon 1) is an Industry Educator in the School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE).

He completed his Bachelor of Construction Management Degree at the University of Newcastle in 2002 and subsequently completed a Masters of Building (Research) in 2006, supported by a CRC for Construction Innovation Scholarship.

Following successful completion of both his undergraduate and master’s degrees, Cameron worked as a client-side Quantity Surveyor for a medium size Quantity Surveying firm for almost 18 years. At the end of 2019, the opportunity arose to become an Industry Educator at the University of Newcastle and Cameron decided it was the right time to peruse his academic career.

RESEARCH

With an undergraduate thesis entitled “Identifying the barriers to implementing Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the Quantity Surveying Profession” and a Masters thesis titled “Implementing Building Product Models: Perspectives from an Australian Construction Project”, he is currently furthering his research through a PhD that is exploring the application of economic theory to improve the decision-making in cost planning.

TEACHING & ADMINISTRATION

Cameron is currently coordinating two of the Quantity Surveying related courses in the Bachelor of Construction Management (Hons) program, which aligns closely to both his industry experience and research interests.

His teaching methods emphasize his industry experience with a focus on sharing practical experiences and applying hands on learning. Students are provided with two industry standard software platforms that allow them to undertake both ‘on-screen’ take-off from pdf/CAD files and also to interact with and extract quantities from a BIM file.

As a member of both the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Cameron is currently assisting with the Construction Management disciplines accreditation with these professional bodies.

Cameron is also a member of the Program Convenor for the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, on the College Board for the College of Engineering, Science and Environment and an active member of the disciplines Industry Advisory Panel.
