Higher Education Experience

For over 20 years I have been engaged with the tertiary education sector in almost every aspect of teaching and learning. I served as an academic for ten years teaching and researching in the field of Visual Communication and Graphic Design and a spent another 6 years contributing to the wider university body as a Learning Designer. My approach to teaching and learning capitalises on the principles of Context-Based Learning and the practical application of knowledge. I have designed and delivered workshops and training for course design for academics and other teaching staff, right through to entire course and program reviews and re-design projects. These projects straddle the full breadth of tertiary education delivery modes (face-to-face, online and blended) and prioritise the ability to create clear learning outcomes and ensure that learning pathways are effective and enjoyable for students and teachers alike.

Since completing a research Masters in Education in the field of Learning Design, I have become keenly aware of how technology and instruction intertwine in adult learning settings. Titled, ‘Designing Lecture Presentations Using Cognitive Load Theory and Visual Communication Principles’, my thesis describes how academics employ multimedia tools in their teaching and the effect their practices have on authentic learning.
